Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu Wins International Award

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been awarded with the 2013 Templeton Prize worth U.S.$1.7 million, which is "an acknowledgement of his spiritual journey on Earth". Previous winners include Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama.

The award of the 2013 Templeton Prize to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is an acknowledgement of his spiritual journey on Earth, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said ...

"He is an activist, who for more than forty-years has spoken truth to power. But he is, at heart, a pastor," said the foundation's executive director Mpho Tutu.

"On the Archbishop's behalf, we wish to thank Dr John M Templeton and his colleagues at the John Templeton Foundation for this honour, and for their steadfast and generous commitment to fostering spiritual growth and mutual understanding on earth."

The executive director said there were many individuals and institutions who deserved acknowledgement for their role in Tutu's life.

Agence France Press reported on Thursday that Tutu was awarded the US1.7 million (around R15.7 million) prize for his lifelong work to promote "love and forgiveness".

The 81-year-old Nobel peace laureate, who rose to fame in the 1980s as a vocal opponent of South Africa's white-minority apartheid regime, would be presented with the award at a ceremony in London next month.

The Archbishop Emeritus would meet with Templeton in Cape Town next Thursday for a media briefing.
